Dairy over Arthur's Tanganyika trip 25. august til 26. october 2007

  Danish version

Sunday the 2nd of September 2007

We were excited men that, after the daily snorkeling with following breakfast, left for Chitutu. Kenneth wanted to see the Xenotilapia sp (“Red Princess”), and I was anxious to get a look at the Gnathochromis permaxillaris, but once again we were victims of poor visibility. At 28 meters a stopped my dive, and headed up the 45 degree cliff wall to the surface. After this dive we sailed directly for Isanga, where I was going to try to find my harpoon. Kenneth was going to try to harpoon some fish for Edvin. Relatively quickly I found the gill net underneath some rocks, about 100 meters offshore. I had a good sense of from what direction I had come, and started looking for my harpoon. After about five minutes I discovered it lying between two rocks, and I hereafter tried shooting some petroes. It is a weird feeling to shoot fish that at home cost up towards five hundred Danish crowns (close to 100 U.S Dollars), but you get used to it, strange as it may sound.

Afterwards we had about an hours break before we dove back in with the photo equipment, and of course my streak of bad luck was not at an end yet. The battery for my D80 that had shown “fully juiced up” this morning now showed “empty”, and there was no way of reviving it. Furthermore it turned out that it couldn’t be recharged at all, so it was a good thing that I had brought three extra batteries with me from Denmark. My mask still gets very foggy, and I’m constantly forced to let water in to be able to see anything. Tomorrow I will try using the other mask a brought here and see if it makes a difference. Visibility here at Isanga was worse than at Chitutu, so we quickly ended the dive and headed back home. We were just in time to get lunch, before Toby and Kenneth went upstairs to watch soccer. While they were watching the game I took a nap. Afterwards I tried to tune my photo equipment. It is still teasing me, and I don’t really know what is wrong.

Just before sunset some divers came back from a trip to Nsumbu, and we got to see Toby lose his temper when he discovered that they had mixed to different kinds of Calvus (that look very much alike) in one barrel. It took them a couple hours to straighten it out.
