Today my hand feels much better and I’m relieved. It still hurts, but the swelling is decreasing and it seems to be going the right way. The goal of the day was Katoto, and turned out to be some really nice diving. Unfortunately my unlucky streak isn’t at an end yet, and my brand new battery ran out of juice, though it said it was at a hundred percent when I left. Good thing I brought extra batteries with me to Africa. There was plenty to look at, and especially six Boulengerchromis stretching about forty centimeters that were curiously watching me. There were many Petrochromis. I had a super dive and was reluctant to stop. Next place to visit was Kaskalawe, but this rocky-bottomed lake was a little bit disappointing. Since my camera was out of  battery I brought my harpoon instead and shot a sixty centimeter long eel with a diameter of about six centimeters, a big bad mother…. On the way home we went by the harbor in Mupulungu. It was packed with people waiting for one of the many boats that take folk up and down the coast.

Today was payday, and all the employees were present. The stood in a big group and were called up on after the other. The paycheck was paid out in a bundle of dirty bills. On the way out the loan sharks were waiting for their payments. The people thoroughly counted their bills.

Tonight we are having chicken. One thing is certain: I won’t be losing any weight staying here with Toby (though I have read that you can’t help but lose weight when in Africa). This evening the calling card for my cellular phone finally let me have a break and I established a connection with Jeanett. I was wonderful to hear her voice. During the day I don’t think that much about her, but in the evenings I miss her, and it will probably get worse the next three weeks.
