Dairy over Arthur's Tanganyika trip 25. august til 26. october 2007

  Danish version

Tuesday the 28 th of august 2007

Today it got serious. We got up at seven and started the day with some snorkeling in the warm water, and what an experience. Swimming amongst all those fish you know from back home, and in these amounts. When I got back up on the beach it became clear to me in what a great location that Toby’s lodge is situated. From the ocean only the pier is visible, and you can only partly see that there is a lodge. From the huts there is a fabulous view of the lake through the blooming trees. Toby is very much in to his garden, and every morning two men water it. This is how they spend their afternoon. Good thing for him that he doesn’t have to buy the water at Copenhagen prices.

What should I say about the place? I’m completely overwhelmed, and even though I had heard of it back in Copenhagen, it wasn’t till now it really became clear to me what a fantastic place Toby’s cabin is situated. Today we had two dives, and I’m about to have set the equipment for diving in this lake. I must admit that I was a bit too excited to get started. For the day’s second dive I hadn’t checked my oxygen bottles, and this resulted in me having to stop the 10 meter dive after half an hour, cause I was running out of air.

It gets dark quickly in Africa, and already at a little past six it is too dark to wirte or read. Since we only have bat lights there isn’t much to do but eat and drink a couple beers at the bar. There is electricity in the main house, but only for the basic necessities.

It is actually Toby’s birthday today, but unfortunately he is not really feeling well and after dinner he went to bed, though promising that he would be returning at full strength tomorrow. After having had a few drinks with Toby’s niece Anna, we went to bed.
